NEW CLOTH & NEW WINE

Shalom in Yahshua and welcome once again to the teachings of our Rabbi and Master Yahshua Ha Mashiach.

Today we are going to look at two verses of Scripture in found in Matt.9:16,17.

The context of these verses gives us the clear meaning of these two verses.

Here we find Yahshua being asked by the Pharisees why Yahshua eats with the publicans and sinners and next the disciples of John ask why His disciples do not fast but they, and the Pharisees do?

In verse 12 Yahshua clearly presents the case that they which are whole need not a physician but they who are sick. And in verse 15 He answers the question regarding fasting.

Now that we have the context lets look at vs. 16 & 17.

A new cloth is not put to an old garment....or else the rent is made worse.

Similarly, new wine is put into new bottles for if it is put into the old, the bottles break and the wine runs out.

Today, many turn, and even run to their supposed religious leaders (the pharisees of today) and ask about this doctrine and that teaching, and behold they receive the old garment, and the bottles with old traditions mingled with just enough truth to deceive. And they are deceived.

Others, being satisfied with their traditions and spiritual attainments look know farther then the latest sermon for spiritual understanding and insight; thus when the old garment and bottles of old (mingled doctrine) is presented they are satisfied and go away empty and sick. For they know not that they are sick or in need of new wine which will help them in the coming trouble.

They do not receive the new wine (doctrine) in the new bottle (renewed heart and mind) and thus the work which Elohim designs to be done in and through them is left undone. The Master comes and the slothful servant can't give Him His own with usury.

Some are sincerely ignorant of the falsehoods they have inherited but nonetheless YHVH will give them opportunity to discover them.
(Jer.16:21) & Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages; (Isa.49:8)

We cannot receive the new unless we discover first off that the old is in need of further reformation. The reformation that was started in the 16th century was and is continuing on apace. Only those who avail themselves of the precious rays of light now shining from the Word of YHVH; and bring to light our present duties and privileges will be prepared for the day of trouble which is even now beginning to descend upon us.

Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe [which is] instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man [that is] an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure [things] new and old. Mat.13:52

  1. This is so poignantly true. How often we miss the new wine offered to us by Christ! How often we forget we are still His disciples and it is to Him we can directly run to for learning.

This reminded me of John 12:26, "If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me..." and John 1:37, "The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus" and, as you pointed out that Jesus is our Master/Rabbi, Mt 23:8, "But you, do not be called 'Rabbi'; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren."

Has the Church forgotten that John's disciples LEFT John to go follow Christ instead? We shouldn't be any different than them, right? So many believers today are SO dependent on other Christians rather than Christ that it has crippled them to being able to follow Christ on their own. We are to be STRONG in Christ, but so many are weak. It is heartbreaking, especially for my generation. The thing is, they don't even realize this. They are missing SO much of Christ and they don't even know it. Jesus said we are not to make ourselves Masters over other believers, and yet this practice is absolutely rampant in the Church today. I know a lot of them are doing it because they think they are doing good, but because they are ignoring His Word, they are causing so, so, so much harm. It is so beyond heartbreaking. The damage has been done and the struggle for a believer to get back to a normal one-on-one Master/servant relationship with Christ will be longer, harder, and more difficult, if not impossible for some believers.

But...I love how you pointed out the truth of this by showing the positive side that Christ offers us SO much if we would just turn away from following other believers and follow Him, and receive the fullness of ALL He personally offers us! There is always hope, and even in the most difficult situations, we can still do ALL things through Christ who strengthens us.

Such an honest and bold post, Yuri, thank you for standing up for the truth of God's Word in this.

  2. Shalom Heather and thanks for stopping here, reading this post and leaving your comment. I rejoice that we can agree on several important matters. Like the supremacy of Yahshua, His eternal existence, His Oneness with His Father,His infinite power and love, His virgin birth; His sinless life, His perfect sacrifice at Golgotha (for us all),His resurrection on the 3rd day; His intercessions for us in the sanctuary above (as our High Priest), His soon return in power and great glory, our need to be like Him in all things, and our blessed hope of living with Him forevermore in the new earth. All this and more is open to all who truly believe on Him who is the first begotten from the dead and the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Knowing that our vile bodies will be changed and fashioned like unto His glorious body; however, always bearing in mind that we are called to suffer for His sake; and that before honor is humility.

Shalom and thanks once again for your comment; much of which I agree with.
